May is designated Women in Pathology Month, and Behind Our Science celebrated by interviewing the Engevik sisters, Mindy, Amy, and Kristen.
Sisterhood and Science
The Engevik sisters, Mindy, Amy and Kristen, shared their unique bond as sisters and colleagues in science. They discussed the challenges and rewards of working together and how they support each other’s careers. The sisters also talked about the importance of having good mentors, especially for women in science.
“We’re so lucky to have each other,” said Mindy Engevik. “We can always count on each other for support, encouragement, and advice.”
“It’s also great to be able to share our experiences with each other,” added Amy Engevik. “We can learn from each other’s successes and failures.”
The Engevik sisters are known for their beautiful fluorescent microscopy images, which they share on Twitter using the hashtag #FluorescentFriday.
They discussed their favorite antibodies and staining techniques, and offered tips for troubleshooting common problems. They also shared their excitement about a new antibody company they recently discovered.
“We love being able to share our passion for fluorescent microscopy with others,” said Kristen Engevik. “We hope that our images will inspire other scientists to explore this exciting field.”
Challenges and Takeaways
The Engevik sisters also discussed the challenges they have faced as women in science, such as sexism and discrimination.
“We’ve definitely faced our share of challenges,” said Mindy Engevik. “But we’ve never let that stop us.”
“We’ve learned to speak up for ourselves and to stand up for what we believe in,” added Amy Engevik.
The Engevik sisters also shared their most important takeaways from their careers so far.
“The most important lesson we’ve learned is to never give up on your dreams,” said Kristen Engevik. “No matter what obstacles you face, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.”
